• Pardon the dust while the boys rebuild the site.

The board will be in a state of disarray as I get things sorted out, for a little while at least.

The new incarnation is using Xenforo as the system software. It is much like what we are used to, with a few differences. I will see about making a FAQ to help point out the differences for the members.

One IMPORTANT difference for all of us old timers is that the 'mail' system is replaced with what are called 'conversations'/

There is no 'Inbox' or 'Out box' or 'Sent' folders anymore.

Think of Conversations as private 'threads' or topics that don't exist in a forum, that you start with another member. NOTE: Conversations can include more than one member if you or someone else in the conversaion, likes.
Takes a little getting used to but I am sure you all can get a hang of it.

Only a slightly modified default default Xenforo style is available for now. Once the new SAG style is ready it will be available.

All existing users should be able to login with their usernames and passwords once the site goes up.

Thank you for your support and patience. I know it has been a loooong road.

Project - DAK - FLAK38

G'day all and I hope everyone is up for another, COVID-aside, year of great posts.

I was looking at progressing in both Wehrmacht Mobility and Firepower this year for a combine large series of dioramas for the November show but I've shelved it all in-favour of returning to my original 2013 theme - the Deutsche Afrika Korps - because 1. I'm starting to get into 'Bolt Action' that 28mm wargame which because my mate is doing Brit/Commonwealth 8th Army I've had to go DAK. 2. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of when Rommel's renowned force (well, soon to be renowned) came to Mussolini's aid given the Italian grand plan for a new empire was falling apart in the Mediterranean.

So, with that in-mind, I thought I'd bring forward my 2023 plan (which was to be the tenth anniversary of my dioramas) with the DAK with which I started with way back in 2013 but thought why split the research required of Mobility, Firepower and DAK when I can just go DAK-centric on both accounts. The big difference between the 2013 diorama is that I plan to do several in typical fashion covering the DAK in more detail in the process with several additional vehicles/weapon platforms and over 20 additional DAK figures to that of the 2013 battlegroup. Information panels and large info board also.

Without further explanation, the first 'cab off the rank' is an old CHE FLAK38 which I bought from a Swap n' Sell rather cheaply ($50 I seem to recall). By adding a spare gunshield and spent cartridge cage, my aim is to use a real-life example on display at the Australian War Memorial which two of my mates put together some years back in a round enclosure (fibreglass rocks) with all the wherewithal of the gun and gunner. Unfortunately the set-up was removed with only the gun remaining but I did, back then, take heaps of pics of it so that is my inspiration.

I realised that I've left off the central armoured plate so I'll rectify that for future pics. Rather than just a stone defensive enclosure, I'll use a mix of stone and sandbags. A couple of FLAK gunners and various stores will complement the scene. For now though, some pics of the model and that of the AWM's example taken some years back. Enjoy, Steve

Looks like a great start, and great source material.

looking forward to watching the progress.

DAK is one of the lil interests in my collection, with a small contingent I've been collecting bits over the years to expand and put a small display together, will def be keeping an eye on your updates, the Flak38 looks amazing!!!

G'day all,

Just some pics of the completed FLAK 38 (save for the cable for the flakvisier 38/40 which I've since added. Though the gun will remain the central piece of this particular scene, the work on its rock/sandbag sangar, crew and wherewithal begins and will post pics once completed.

Meanwhile, hope you enjoy the transformation pics. I personally find DML/CHE's Flak guns (the 38, Vierling and 'Jaboschreck') great pieces for rendition and of a great size for small dioramas. Enjoy, Steve

This particular scene covers several key aspects of the Afrika Korps, the environment and changing fortunes in air parity/superiority with the RAF's Desert Air Force during the crucial 1941/42 period ending in El Alamein.

As with every theatre of war the Germans fought, the Luftwaffe diminished in strength and capability leading to the employment of increasing numbers of ground-based air defence. In North Afrika (as with other fronts), both the Flak 36/37 and 38 were renowned for dual-purpose and both very effective.

I wanted to convey the harshness of the desert on the piece, the desert was not kind to man nor machine and being so fine made its way into everything. More than one soldier (Axis and Allied) have stated the problems attached to fighting in the desert more challenging than actual combat. Weapon crews - such as that which manned the Flak 38 - spent more time dusting off their ordnance than anything else ensuring it functioned when the time came. Lubricants only caused more build-up and had to be used sparingly. Corrosion and paint impacted at a faster rate than anywhere else and the thinly applied sand-coloured coating wore-off at wear points and hard edges which makes for a fine effect in and of itself when compared to other theatres of operation.

G'day all,

Just a quick update, with the gun complete it's now time to concentrate on its 'sangar' enclosure. With the ground of North Africa more often than not very hard to dig into (without the help of powered drills), soldiers on both sides tended to build-up their defences using whatever they could utilise - rocks, sandbags and terrain features such as folds in the ground. Still using the War Memorial's example, I've built-up the defences using 'desert sandstone' pieces (shards souvenired from a landscaping store nearby) and a large portion of my sandbag stock.

Meanwhile, the wear...er...wherewithal of my DAK stores is being sorted and aside from the 20 or so figures that I used in the 2013 diorama, I've another 20 or so that I can assemble for the 2021 series of dioramas. First will be the crew of the Flak 38 so that I can pack it away for the model show.

The pics seen here is how I'll lay it out and there'll be a few additional pieces, other than the crew, to sharpen it moreso. I've saved the dust that came of the rocks in a container, the intent being to cover the sandbags with it and give the scene a more authentic appearance come model show time. Enjoy, Steve

G'day Kapernakis,

The Flak 38 will be manned by Heer personnel (given the gun was used by Army and Luftwaffe A/A units), however; I'll be using Luftwaffe crew for the Flak 36 ('88) when I commence that scene representing 1 Abteilung (battalion) Flak-Regiment 33...but more on that later. As for what they'll wear, it'll be a mix of clothing (much in-line with the diorama series it'll play to a wide-range of DAK uniforms and equipment) - shorts, undershirts, tunic, trousers, helmets, caps etc etc in order to give the individual appearance to each figure. Cheers, Steve
